Captain Nick Foligno will miss tonight’s game against the Ottawa Senators, and will miss future games until further notice.
Foligno will be in Boston for his 5-year-old daughter's heart surgery.
Milana Foligno was born with a congenital heart condition known as mitral valve arcade. In essence, the muscles connected to the leaflets of the heart are shortened or thickened which makes it difficult for the heart to pump out blood. Over time, this can lead to blood building up and overflowing into other parts of the heart or blood can stop flowing all together.
Milana underwent surgery when she was just a few weeks old. She’s been closely monitored and the Foligno’s are grateful to the staff at the Boston hospital for their hard work of keeping the condition under control. Everything seemed to be going well until recently when she was hospitalized after fighting off a virus. Now, the young girl is scheduled to have surgery once more.
Foligno announced his departure to the team during practice to which his fellow players saluted him and dog piled him in a 25-man hug.
In the meantime, the rest of the Jackets will take on the Ottawa Senators.
The Sens come to Columbus in last place in their division. They have 34 points compared to Columbus’ 47. Their record currently is 15-20-4 while the Jackets are sitting at 22-13-3.
Ottawa’s defense has been lacking a bit as they have allowed 3.92 goals per game. Conversely, they’re still doing well in the scoring department averaging 3.15 goals per game.
People have been complaining about CBJ’s goalie situation, but looking at Ottawa, Columbus is doing just fine.
Their top goalie, Craig Anderson, is out with a concussion suffered during their 5-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils back on December 21. The team has gone through four goal tenders who have all faced adversity. They have allowed 37.4 shots against per game.
With Anderson being out, the Senators will start rookie Marcus Hoberg who made his NHL debut on Saturday against Washington. He made 21 saves on 24 shots, but the Sens ultimately lost 3-2.
